Senior Estimator – Rail (Structures)
Rail | Structures | Heavy Civils
Location: East London
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: £100,000 – £150,000
Working Pattern: 5 days on site with flexible working available
A leading contractor operating within the rail and heavy civil engineering sector is seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join its pre‑construction team. The role focuses on the pricing and delivery of complex structures and heavy civils projects, typically valued between £20m and £150m, delivered predominantly across London.
Current and upcoming schemes involve major structural steel installation and alteration works within live, constrained and operational environments. These projects sit at the interface of rail infrastructure, heavy civils and structural modifications, often requiring intricate sequencing, advanced temporary works solutions and detailed pre‑construction planning.
Role & Responsibilities
As Senior Estimator, you will take full ownership of the estimating process for major rail‑related structures and heavy civils schemes. Working closely with senior management, planners, engineers and commercial teams, you will play a pivotal role in securing work and shaping bid strategy.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading tenders for rail, structures and heavy civils projects valued up to £150m
- Managing estimates for complex rail infrastructure works including trackside and over‑rail structures, station and lineside assets, bridges and viaducts, access and possessions‑driven works, temporary works within live rail environments, and interfaces with track, OLE, signalling and operational railway systems
- Pricing projects delivered within live rail corridors and restricted urban environments, where access, possession planning and safety‑critical interfaces are key
- Reviewing drawings, specifications and contract documentation to develop robust and competitive cost plans
- Coordinating inputs from planning, engineering, commercial and delivery teams to reflect buildability and programme constraints
- Engaging with the supply chain to obtain, interrogate and assess subcontractor and supplier quotations
- Identifying commercial risks, opportunities and value‑engineering solutions, particularly around sequencing, temporary works and logistics
- Supporting bid strategy meetings, tender reviews and senior management approvals
- Assisting with pre‑construction handover to ensure alignment with delivery teams
About You
- Proven experience as a Senior or Principal Estimator within rail, structures or heavy civils
- Strong track record of tendering technically complex, high‑value projects in live or constrained environments
- In‑depth understanding of structures, construction methodology, sequencing and temporary works
- Confident leading bids and engaging with senior internal and external stakeholders
- Commercially astute, detail‑focused and proactive in managing risk and opportunity
- Comfortable working in a 5‑day onsite environment, with flexibility as required
What’s on Offer
- Competitive salary of £100,000 – £150,000
- Permanent role on major rail and structures projects (£20m–£150m)
- 5 days onsite with flexible working options
- Opportunity to work on technically challenging, high‑profile infrastructure schemes across London
- Long‑term career security within a well‑established contractor
